PJA was appointed by Inland Ltd to provide urban design and transport planning advice for a new development on the site of the former Winter Gardens, Bournemouth.

The mixed-use redevelopment of this historic music venue comprises 5,959 sq.m of commercial space, 114 residential dwellings, 8,764 sq.m of leisure space and a hotel as well as new open air public piazzas.

Initially refused planning consent in 2012 and 2013, PJA was appointed by Inland Ltd to work alongside the scheme architects to provide urban design and transport planning.

A key aspect of the revised design was the delivery of a key section of Bournemouth’s ‘Grand Garden Walk’, a circulatory public realm route around the town.

The design solution included amendment to the previous architectural solution to allow the delivery of significant new public realm, including major interventions to Exeter Road which carries around 10,000 vehicles per day, including the removal of traffic signals at the junction of Exeter Road and Terrace Road.

PJA worked on the concept design for the public realm and less managed street environment and was responsible for the detailed VISSIM traffic modelling of the scheme.

PJA is now working with the detailed design team, to prepare designs suitable for technical approval and subsequent construction.
