PJA was commissioned by Inland Homes to provide transport planning and design advice for a residential-led mixed use development scheme at Chapel Riverside in Southampton.
The development will accommodate 457 residential units as well as 5,000sq.m of commercial space and will create a new neighbourhood with generous green spaces and an extension of the Riverfront Walk, which integrates the site into the wider city area.
As part of the Transport Assessment process PJA developed an integrated transport strategy for the site to encourage travel by sustainable modes, and to provide vehicular access to the development.
PJA also prepared a car park and servicing strategy, which set out the proposed parking provision and anticipated demand from the different land uses on site, and the proposed controls to prevent match day parking for St Mary’s Stadium.
The project included major interventions to Albert Road North as part of the Council’s wider strategy for the area to reduce the dominance of vehicles, calm traffic and improve facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. PJA prepared initial concept designs for Albert Road North, including potential shared space solutions, a developed the final scheme which significantly improved the provision for pedestrians and cyclists and could be extended as part of a wider redevelopment of the area surrounding the site.
The Chapel Riverside scheme was granted outline approval in August 2017. The scheme encourages the delivery of a potential wider scheme for the area with similar junction interventions and transport infrastructure improvements.
