PJA succeeded in their proposal that the partial closure of Basil Street in Knightsbridge be made permanent, creating space for an improved streetscape scheme and enhanced pedestrianised area.

The section of Basil Street east of Pavilion Road has been closed since 2019 to facilitate the building of the “K1 Development”, the prominent building on the corner of Sloane Street and Brompton Road. Soon afterwards, PJA proposed to the Knightsbridge Estate and Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea (RBKC) that the closure be made permanent, and an improved streetscape scheme and enhanced pedestrian space be provided.

Since then, PJA has worked closely with the landowner of the Knightsbridge Estate, RBKC and key stakeholders to develop a streetscape improvement proposal for Basil Street, between the junctions with Pavilion Road and Sloane Street. The proposal would significantly enhance the public realm for the local community to enjoy, improve pedestrian accessibility to the new step-free access entrance to Knightsbridge tube station located on Hoopers Court, and advance cycling connections across Knightsbridge. This scheme will be funded by the K1 developer at no cost to the Council.

PJA undertook design, obtained all approvals, and oversaw construction of works onsite to close this section of Basil Street in Knightsbridge to provide a pedestrian-friendly public realm scheme, facilitating safer pedestrian access to the new step-free underground station, as well as prevent through traffic directly accessing Sloane Street from Basil Street, helping to reduce congestion levels.
