PJA has been commissioned by YTL Developments (UK) to provide transport planning and street engineering advice to support the development of a new masterplan for Filton Airfield, South Gloucestershire, located on the urban edge of Bristol.

The development will accommodate approximately 2,700 homes and 24 hectares of employment land, as part of the wider Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood allocation in Bristol’s North Fringe.

The principles of redeveloping the airfield were established by BAe Systems in 2014. Since purchasing the site in 2015, YTL has assembled a prestigious design team, led by Allies and Morrision  as masterplanners, with support from Grant Associates (Landscape), PJA (streets and transport) and a range of other specialists. The design team has developed a new vision for Filton Airfield based on the latest thinking around placemaking and movement.

One of the key challenges for the redevelopment of the airfield, was perforating the secure perimeter of the airfield site to establish a permeable network of routes through and across the former airfield, with an existing road network and local development context which had developed to reinforce the impermeable nature of the site.

The development benefited from a proposed new rail halt, and the masterplan was required to accommodate a route for an extension of the bus rapid transit network, and provide a route for the South Gloucestershire Cycle Trunk Route.

The internal movement network was developed to maximise the accessibility of these facilities which will help to make the site one of the most accessible places in South Gloucestershire.

A revised outline application for development of the site was submitted in March 2017 and now has planning consent.

PJA are retained and have helped prepare a more detailed streets and infrastructure masterplan for the site and have also acted as highways consultant on the first phase reserved matters application.
