PJA has led the development of several design guidance documents including:

  • Manual for Streets, DfT
  • Manual for Streets 2, IHT
  • CD195 Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Highways England
  • Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan Guidance, DfT
  • Local Transport Note 1-20 Cycle Infrastructure Design., DfT
  • Active Travel Wales Guidance, Welsh Government

Our approach to these projects is collaborative. Our core writing team works with a wide range of stakeholders using a review panel to agree the initial contents page and to help contribute their expertise to each chapter.

The round table review process helps to reconcile stakeholders with opposing views, leading to balanced recommendations within the text, aiming to present viable ideas that are legal, inspirational and aspirational.

During work to update the Active Travel Wales Design guidance we helped to arrange and facilitate several stakeholder workshops with Councils and user groups who provided feedback on the initial guidance and the process of submitting active travel documentation to Welsh Government.

This collection of feedback at the events enabled us to modify the processes alongside the design guidance, so that users can see a more direct link between design and legislation.

Our team also has extensive experience of delivering dissemination events and training for Highways England, Department for Transport, Welsh Government, Institute of Highway Engineers, Institute of Highways and Transportation and English local authorities.

We work with a number of high-profile Universities including Birmingham, Leeds and Westminster to help deliver education and undertake research. We are fully equipped to deliver online training, in house mentoring and face to face events.
