PJA and IBI Group and were appointed by Cheltenham Borough Council (CBC) to create a masterplan for a key area of Cheltenham Town Centre incorporating the Municipal Buildings, Royal Well Road, Promenade and the Long Gardens.
The masterplan will form part of a wider placemaking vision to maximise the potential of Cheltenham’s streets, buildings and surroundings to create high quality, world class public places. With its Regency heritage and many attractive features to exploit, CBC commissioned this study to improve this important town centre area to support Cheltenham’s economy and communities in a 21st century setting.
The study area incorporates a key part of Cheltenham’s inner ring road; two of the town’s main bus interchanges; and a significant amount of on-street parking and loading, all of which result in the area being dominated by vehicles, and present a challenge for the improvement of the public realm. During the first stage of the study a range of intervention options for the study area were developed and consulted upon with key stakeholders. The options considered a range of traffic reduction levels and interaction with the Cheltenham Transport Plan measures which are still being rolled out included alterations to the Boots Corner area of the town centre in recent months.
Stage two of the study is now underway.
