The aim of Streets of All is to create streets that better balance the movement of people and goods with the creation of more friendly places marrying the skills of urban designers, transport planners and engineers and landscape architects.

Using this philosophy, PJA in collaboration with Broadway Malyan and Mott MacDonald, were commissioned to work on the Streets for All (Orbital) project for Transport for Greater Manchester.

Working through a co-design led process, our remit was to take the busy A58 corridor running between Wigan and Rochdale and the A627 between Rochdale and Ashton under Lyne and develop a series of street typologies based on an assessment of movement and place criteria.

This required the development of a detailed baseline which analysed a number of different health, economic, social and environmental indicators that were adversely affecting the quality of life for residents and businesses on the route.

Existing and aspirational cross sections were developed based on these locally referenced street types, which were then tested with local officers and members and against Healthy Streets indicators.

Focus areas were then identified for intervention with concept designs developed to respond to the issues and opportunities identified at the baseline stage.

Our work helped to feed into a new emerging Streets for All design guide. With the conclusion of the pilot studies, detailed designs and business cases will be developed as the schemes are taken forward to implementation.
