PJA was commissioned by Sustrans and Thames Valley Berkshire LEP to produce sustainable transport strategies for two sites in the borough of Wokingham – Grazeley and Twyford.
The project was funded through the Sustainable Transport Delivery Excellence Programme (STDEP) to provide guidance on strategic sustainable transport schemes within LEP areas.
PJA undertook a review of transport and produced a high-level transport strategy to provide a framework for transport and access as the strategic sites come forward.
The Grazeley site lies immediately to the south of the M4 and the town of Reading and would form a significant urban extension to Reading, although lies within Wokingham borough.
The Twyford site lies to the south east of the town of Twyford, adjacent to Twyford Rail Station.
The objectives of the commission were:
- Consider the existing transport baseline, including travel patterns, in the vicinity of the sites, focused upon travel to and from Reading
- Consider sustainable transport options for the sites
- Review wider transport scheme proposals in the Wokingham and Reading areas
- High level trip generation and analysis of future travel patterns
- Analysis of potential mode share achievable with high quality sustainable transport travel options;
- Outline Transport Strategy produced for each site
The reports produced for both sites formed part of the evidence base submitted to the Local Plan Update process.
The commission required significant liaison with Wokingham BC officers, LEP representatives and the Sustrans Project Manager.
A significant part of the strategy development involved undertaking complex GIS analysis on the site accessibility and permeability of the local public transport networks.
