In 2015, PJA were commissioned by Forward Swindon as part of a wider team including Allies & Morrison Architects to produce a Movement Strategy for Swindon Town Centre.
The Movement Strategy forms part of a Masterplan Delivery Strategy for the town centre to bring forward many of the development principles which have been proposed for the town over recent years.
The Movement Strategy sets out a series of interventions and measures to be implemented over time to influence traffic circulation, enhance legibility and walkability, promote cycling and improve the cohesiveness of the town centre to support the growth of major new development.
The Strategy applied a ‘Link and Place’ approach to appraising the current town centre networks, identifying key areas for improvement, such as the removal of the dominant one-way vehicular circulation, and improved pedestrian and cycle links to and through the town centre.
The incorporation within a Delivery Strategy ensured the focus was maintained upon achievable and incremental scheme improvements that could be introduced over time depending on development programmes and funding availability.
