PJA was appointed by Windlesham Parish Council to define a design framework and vision for Windlesham village centre, as part of their Neighbourhood Plan process. The project aims to reduce traffic dominance in and to improve facilities available to pedestrian and cyclists.

The strategy provides the Parish Council and the Neighbourhood Plan Group with a set of priority measures to guide action over the coming years as opportunities come forward and to support the regeneration of the village centre.

The key objectives of the study are:

  •  To retain, support and enhance of the centre as a retail and social focus and as a contributor to the local economy
  •  To retain and promote the quality as a town for visitors and residents
  •  To encourage more walking and cycling and to reduce dependency on private cars

The study serves as a supplement to the Neighbourhood Plan. With local enthusiasm shown to the designed presented to town councillors, PJA were commissioned to develop designs further as part of a Stage 2 study of improvements in the village centre. PJA produced outline designs that reallocated street space to create wider footways and more parking, improved traffic calming, and generally contributed to an enhanced townscape character.
