World Rivers Day reminds us that healthy rivers depend on the actions of many people and organisations, often working far beyond the riverbank itself.
A river flows through many places, but it belongs to none of them. It crosses council boundaries, farms, water company boundaries and project boundaries without hesitation. Decisions made in one place will affect people and environments elsewhere, making joined up planning across the entire catchment essential. So why do we continue to plan, fund and manage it in silos?
The future of our rivers depends on looking beyond individual projects and places, and towards the whole catchment.
A catchment-wide approach means taking collective responsibility for the health of our rivers. Rather than asking what can be achieved within the boundaries of a single organisation or project, we can ask what is needed for the river system as a whole.
This could mean combining investment to address environmental challenges, coordinating development and infrastructure, improving water quality and biodiversity, or creating better places for communities to live, work and enjoy.
It is our experience that the best, longest lasting, outcomes involve collaboration between water companies, local authorities, regulators, developers, landowners, communities, and other stakeholders. By bringing perspectives together, organisations can identify shared priorities, coordinate investment, and find opportunities to deliver benefits that extend beyond individual sites.
