PJA was appointed by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) to provide transport advice in relation to a one form entry expansion of Cheswick Green Primary School, Solihull.

The proposal was for the expansion of the existing one form entry primary school to create a new two form entry school for 420 pupils ranging from reception to year 6. In addition to the 420 pupil intake, there will be 30 pre school and 60 nursery children attending the school.

The transport planning and highway engineering teams at PJA worked closely with the school, SMBC client team and local highway authority to develop and agree suitable mitigation proposals for the development, including provision of a dedicated school bus, implementation of a Walking Bus and identification of additional Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) that could be implemented within the vicinity of the school. These mitigation measures were identified through a thorough review of the local highway network, sustainable travel infrastructure and current travel behaviours of staff and pupils at the school. This included undertaking a parking beat survey, parent, staff and pupil surveys, multiple site visits and detailed audits of existing pedestrian and cycle facilities.

The team also advised on the high level principles of a Car Park Management Strategy and car parking layout to ensure that all staff car parking can be accommodated on site. Finally PJA provided advice in relation to achieving access to the site for construction vehicles with the PJA highway engineering team preparing a drawing of the temporary construction access onto Creynolds Lane, which was subsequently agreed with the local highway authority.
