The comprehensive study, led by the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan Partnership, has been launched into how people could travel in and around Shrewsbury in the future.

The ‘movement and public realm strategy’ will involve detailed research and discussions with an extensive range of public and private sector partners, and community groups, ahead of wider public consultation later this year.

The aim is to enhance the attractiveness of Shrewsbury to investment and tourism by removing the dominance of private vehicles and facilitating access by public transport and active travel.

PJA will consider the feedback in detail as well as holding extensive engagement work and research before making recommendations, defining key principles and outlining projects to deliver the vision of the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan.

Given the constrained network within this historic market town, a key aspect of the brief is to identify the interdependencies between multi modal transport movements and land use planning, mapping out issues and opportunities.

PJA will then deliver RIBA 2 designs for public realm improvements in the centre of Shrewsbury, and a comprehensive phasing and delivery plan.

John Myatt, PJA Associate Director, said:

“We are extremely excited to have been asked to help the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan partnership develop the Big Town Plan transport objectives into a more detailed strategy, including identifying the specific schemes required to deliver them. Shrewsbury has many interdependencies that will need to be considered, and we will be working closely with all partners and stakeholders during the study to ensure it’s success”
