With the majority of the UK being identified to be in a state of Serious Water Stress, the focus is turning to Water Neutrality and how new development can reduce its water footprint.

Water Neutrality considers the whole life cycle of water, focusing on specific uses to create the ultimate balance between supply and demand within future development.

With particular focus on the Sussex North Water Supply Zone, Natural England have stated that “For every new development, total water use in the region after the development must be equal to or less than the total water-use in the region before the new development.”

Given the continued onset of climate change, the catchment areas of serious water stress will increase and, in the future, there will be an even greater need to consider water neutrality.
