PJA supported the permanent closure of a section of Basil Street in Knightsbridge to transform it into a high-quality pedestrianised public space. Working closely with the Knightsbridge Estate, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea (RBKC) and local stakeholders, the scheme delivers an enhanced streetscape, safer access to the new step-free Knightsbridge Underground entrance, and improved pedestrian and cycle connectivity across the area.
Originally closed in 2019 to facilitate construction of the K1 Development at the prominent corner of Sloane Street and Brompton Road, PJA identified the opportunity to make this closure permanent. We proposed reimagining this section of Basil Street (between Pavilion Road and Sloane Street) as an improved pedestrian space, fully funded by the K1 developer at no cost to the Council.
PJA led the design and delivery of the streetscape improvements, overseeing every stage from concept through to construction. Our work included developing a detailed public realm design that enhances pedestrian priority and improves accessibility to the new step-free Knightsbridge Underground entrance on Hoopers Court. We also designed measures to prevent through traffic from using Basil Street to access Sloane Street, helping to reduce congestion, and created enhancements to cycling connections across the wider Knightsbridge area. Throughout the process, we collaborated closely with the Knightsbridge Estate, RBKC and other key stakeholders to secure approvals and ensure the design met local aspirations.
Balancing the ambitions of the landowner, local authority and community within a constrained historic streetscape presented challenges. PJA’s experience in placemaking, urban design and transport planning ensured a design that successfully met diverse needs while respecting the character of Knightsbridge.
The completed scheme delivers an attractive and pedestrian-friendly environment that enhances the setting of the K1 Development and Knightsbridge Estate, improves accessibility to local businesses and the Underground station, and supports wider ambitions to reduce traffic congestion in the area.
