A successful bid to transform mobility in and around Brixton Town Centre.
PJA worked with Bespoke Transport to deliver Lambeth Council’s 2018 Liveable Neighbourhood bid.
Our team was tasked with identifying the right part of the borough to work with, then creating an ambitious and inclusive vision that will transform mobility in that area.
The successful £8 million bid included proposals for low traffic neighbourhoods in the residential areas surrounding Brixton Town Centre with measures to reduce and remove non-local motor traffic. It also included local transport hubs, residential areas and greenspaces linked by high-quality walking and cycling routes through a transformed town centre and market area.
The project delivery focused on the involvement of local people in the development of proposals and providing ownership of the final street designs to the community. Our team facilitated stakeholder engagement throughout the bid process, using workshops and online platforms, to identify challenges and consider possible solutions to improving Brixton. The key challenges identified were:
- Create a more accessible centre, make Brixton a better place to visit with people prioritised rather than motor traffic
- Better station and bus stop access
- Better connectivity and way-finding for surrounding neighbourhoods and estates – the creation of a coherent and safe healthy routes network, linking schools, parks and town centres/stations
- Reduce motor traffic dominance, keeping it on the strategic road network and restricting/removing through motor traffic from residential areas
- Improve air quality
- Improving servicing and freight management
- Cycle parking & shelters
These key priorities were then used to develop the successful vision and scope for a healthier and safer Brixton.
