PJA was appointed by Nottingham City Council to provide highway and urban design advice for streetscape improvements to Carrington Street, Canal Street and Middle Hill.

The route provides a key pedestrian link between the city centre and the railway station, but is currently highway dominated, cluttered with poor pedestrian connectivity, inconsistent and poor-quality materials.

Our brief was to provide an improved and decluttered public realm associated with the removal of general traffic, create better conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users and provide better connectivity between the railway station and city centre via both Carrington Street and Trent Street.

PJA worked on the concept design and was responsible for the detailed VISSIM traffic modelling of the scheme. The project includes major interventions to Carrington Street across Canal Street which carries heavy pedestrian flows, especially in the Saturday peak and from Trent Street across Canal Street, especially in the morning peak.
