A former Solent naval base secured approval for redevelopment: ‘Daedalus Waterfront’.

Led by Daedalus Development Company, PJA was appointed to provide transport planning support for a mixed-use development of the former HMS Daedalus in Lee-on-the-Solent. The 42-acre site will provide the footing for a new community, including nearly 350 homes, employment space, as well as room for commercial amenities and care provisions.

For this project, PJA prepared a number of reports to support the planning application, including a Transport Assessment, a Parking Technical Note, a Framework Travel Plan, and a Walking, Cycling and Horse-Riding Assessment. PJA also provided input to the masterplan and undertook extensive consultation with Hampshire County Council and Gosport Borough Council.

A primary objective central to the vision of the redevelopment is the restoration of the area’s historic buildings, such as the World War One hangars that face the Solent. These structures will act as both a visual and cultural gateway for the project, providing public spaces for community events as well as an upgraded home for The Hovercraft Museum.

The consented proposals will support the generation of a modern community centred entirely around the area’s history, while simultaneously maintaining and repurposing its significant buildings for cultural and communal use, and ultimately bringing this space back to life.
