Next up in our series is Management Accountant, Lynsey Almond, based in our Birmingham office:
Tell us what you do at PJA
I’m the Management Accountant and provide support to the company with all things financial. I prepare the quarterly management accounts and I’m always ready to lend a hand to the Finance Manager whenever needed.
What’s your career path so far?
I started my career in accounts at a company that sold ophthalmic equipment into opticians. I was often used as a test dummy when equipment was being trialled so have had my eyes tested more times that you can imagine. Before that I used to work for Barclays Bank, back before internet banking was a thing and we had a safe full of cash that had to be counted daily. I worked in 3 banks over the time I was there and they are all now closed so I think I had a lucky escape!
What do you enjoy when you’re not working?
I absolutely love to travel and have been lucky enough to have visited over 40 countries so far. My desire to travel has taken a bit of backseat after having children, mainly because it can get pricey and generally they are not the easiest traveling companions. However, I hope that as they get older and less fussy, we can be more adventurous. I also enjoy cooking and eating meals out; good food and wine make me very happy.
Are you a dog or cat person?
Oh, that’s a tough choice, I don’t think I can choose. Both dogs and cats have their own strengths. I love the loyalty of a dog and the love they bring. Cats on the other hand are hilarious and act like they own the house and don’t need you, until they want feeding! I currently only have a dog so If I had to choose then it would be dog just because he gives the best hugs.
What are you currently reading or listening to?
I’ve just finished reading ‘The Island of Missing Trees’ by Elif Shafak. I enjoy fictional stories that draw on history and local traditions, and this book follows the story of some residents of Cyprus and their journey of life disrupted by war. I like to listen to podcasts in the car on the way to work and I am currently listening to ‘Miss Me’ on BBC, which is good for some late 90s and early noughties nostalgia.
Claim to fame?
I once had a drink with Russell Crowe in LA.
