Next up in our series is Graduate Civil Engineer, Joseph Cooper, based in our Birmingham office:
Tell us what you do at PJA
I am a graduate civil engineer within the infrastructure team, and my role involves the production of drawing packs and 3d models to aid in the planning, construction, and appeal process of residential and infrastructure schemes.
What’s your career path so far?
I joined a civil engineering consultancy when I was 21 years old after graduating from Aberystwyth University. I am currently completing my second degree in civil engineering as well as my MICE chartership. During my time at my previous consultancy, I worked on designing large scale earthworks from first principles to delivery on site for a large UK infrastructure scheme for High Speed Two as well as work for National Highways. This had a focus on drainage, earthworks, environmental engineering and watercourse realignment and flood plain compensation as well as working on smaller residential and infrastructure schemes. Since joining PJA I have begun further developing my knowledge of residential design, working on delivering S38, S102, S104 packs and planning packs for residential schemes.
What do you enjoy when you’re not working?
When I’m not working, I enjoy being outdoors. In my spare time I enjoy playing rugby, hiking, travelling, and climbing. I have recently travelled to Nepal, where I hiked for 14 days around the base of Manaslu and ascended through the Larke Pass with local sherpas in the Himalayas – in total I climbed up to 5106m high with my university friends. I have also recently hiked around Torres del Paine National Park, where I visited glaciers and glacial lakes in Patagonia.
Are you a dog or cat person?
Dogs are way cooler than cats! I used to have a 14yrs old labradoodle called Dougal until recently, but now I regularly look after my older sister’s King Charles Spaniel.
What are you currently reading or listening to?
I have currently been reading the ICE manual of geotechnical engineering for university, but in my spare time I enjoy watching documentaries – at the moment I’m watching 24hrs in Police Custody and Ambulance.
Claim to fame?
When I was 16-18 years old, I used to play recreational football with Jude Bellingham who is now a star player for England.
Joseph Cooper, Graduate Civil Engineer
Joseph is a Graduate Civil Engineer working in the Birmingham Office with over 2 years of experience within the sector. He has played a pivotal role while working on large government infrastructure schemes for HS2 and National Highways, as well as experience with smaller residential development sites.
Joseph has experience in 3D modelling for large and small-scale complex earthworks, drainage and highways and has a passion for finding nature-based solutions to engineering problems. He has experience ranging from taking designs from first principle stage to site handover and is currently working towards his MICE chartership qualification.
